7 Sept 2013. Tomato R.M. Protest, Bucharest
At 4 pm in Bucharest, around 300 people gathered in front of the Romanian Government building in Victoria Square to leave their tomatoes on the street. Yes, tomatoes. Why? Because the word “Rosia” means not only red but also tomato in Romanian. At about 4:10 pm many security officers gathered to make sure people are safe on the sidewalk and would not go on the streets. This was after every citizen who was in front of the Government building was invited to cross the street by the security officers. People threw their tomatoes on the streets like there was no tomorrow. The Mega-Image store nearby was left without any kind of tomatoes. The square was not covered in all of them as the people hired to clean the streets did their job continuously.
